A U.S. Election Shock - Take A Deep Breath

In yet another blow to the pollsters and pundits following failures to predict the UK general election and Brexit outcomes, the Republican Party has swept the U.S. Congress and the Oval Office with President-elect Donald Trump winning the election. The week is winding down with some relative technical stability in spite of a number of central bank events and the final of the three presidential debates. Benchmark stock indexes are still under some very mild chart pressure in the US but our TSX has fared a little better by virtue of the uptick in crude oil and precious metals as well as a somewhat dovish message from the Bank of Canada. This will be a busy week for economics with several inflation assessments and central bank announcements on the agenda. Otherwise markets are still digesting Yellen's remarks from late last week about hysteresis and the potential benefits of running a high pressure economy. Cutting through the jargon what it implies is allowing inflation to run about normal while encouraging the unemployment rate to fall even further in an effort to spur business investment and specifically boost the labour participation rate.
